 ====== Account Recovery & Backup File ====== ====== Account Recovery & Backup File ======

-**ATTENTION!** Qortal does not have account recoveryIf you lose access to your account, you will not be able to recover it without your seed phrase or backup file. Here's what you need to do:+{{:qortal_official_logo_transparent_.png?400|}}

-  - Click on the gear icon in the top right corner of the UI. +**ATTENTION!** Qortal does not have account recovery, in the conventional sense where you could reach out to Qortal devs and they could help you recover your account/walletThis is true decentralization, so it is up to YOU to safely store a backup file for account recovery. If you lose access to your account, for example if your computer stops working, you will not be able to recover it without your seed phrase or backup file. During account setup, you can select ‘I am an advanced user’ to see your seedphrase. You can refresh until you find seedphrase combination you like. Write that down, memorize it maybe? But it is important to note that you do not need your seedphraseAll you need is the backup file, which is your encrypted private key. This means if someone had your backup file, they still couldn’t hack your account without the password you make to decrypt it! This is a much safer option than having a seedphrase written down, as that is all a hacker needs to gain access to your account/wallet.
-  - Click on security +
-  - Enter password before you download the backup file & write it down +
-  - Download backup file to a usb thumb drive (or multiple devices) +
-  - Safely store the usb thumb drive and password you wrote down in a safe/security deposit box +
-  - Take it a step further and detail the passing on of these two items to a loved one in your will! +
-  - **DO NOT SHARE YOUR SEED PHRASE OR BACKUP FILE/PASSWORD WITH ANYONE AS THIS GAINS ENTRY TO YOUR ACCOUNT.** +
-  - It is perfectly safe to share your PUBLIC KEY and ADDRESS as this is public information on the chain.+

-{{:photo_2021-03-15_02.32.34.jpeg?400|}}+This file will never 'grow' in size as it is only your login credential (encrypted private key)But keep in mind, if you lose the password to your backup file, you are out of luck!
